The Norwegian Police Security Service can trace its history back to the years immediately preceding World War II.
The archives of the Service were destroyed in the first phase of the war to prevent it falling into the hands of the enemy. Therefore some uncertainty prevails regarding exactly when our Service was established. Some contend that this was as early as 1936. However, in 1937 at any rate, the Service was in existence.
In 2002, the Service was reorganised, and the Norwegian name of the Service was changed from "Politiets overvåkingstjeneste" to "Politiets sikkerhetstjeneste".
