All activities carried out by PST must be in accordance with existing primary and secondary legislation. We cannot decide who or what we protect, or what kind of criminal activity we will focus on combating, but we act in accordance with the responsibilities we are given by the Norwegian Parliament, Government and the Ministry.
The Norwegian Parliament also lays down the primary rules about how we carry out our responsibility. The principal bases for PST’s policing work are the Criminal Procedure Act, Police Act and Data Protection Act. The legislative framework drawn up by the Norwegian Parliament is generally supplemented by regulations. Key regulations for our purposes are the PST Code of Practice, Prosecution Code of Practice and Police Code of Practice.
