Security advice

PST is responsible for providing advice to other Norwegian authorities and parts of business and industry on matters related to public security.
Discharging this function requires the expertise that enables us to stipulate how the Norwegian public sector and key businesses can best develop contingency plans for criminal activity and crises that can affect the fabric of Norwegian society. We must also make this expertise available to relevant institutions.

Allocation of roles within PST
The PST Unit of each police district is responsible for providing security advice to local public sector bodies and other entities that require assistance and fall within Chapter 6, second sub-section of the PST Code of Practice. PST Headquarters carries out this function in Oslo Police District. The Headquarters is also responsible for providing security advice to entities outside Oslo that are of critical national significance.

Providing advice depends on preceding analysis
The provision of sound advice on security issues demands a prior analytical process. Having gathered intelligence from various sources and compared the different material, we can make an informed judgment of a security challenge, and provide advice on how the challenge should be managed.
Good analysis depends on the existence of robust information on which to build. It is critical for PST to obtain access to relevant, good quality information from relevant sources. Our threat assessments are one of the products of our analysis activity, and a tool for further work by PST or external recipients.
